My mother retired in 2006 as Section Chief at the Bureau of Internal Revenue in Manila.

For her grand send off, she was treated by office friends at this hotel restaurant in downtown Manila. The program included song numbers, rap songs and poems about my mother’s work at the BIR. There was also a cake and a plaque in honor of her many decades of work in government service.

Days later, we joined her in another retirement treat in Emerald Garden restaurant in Roxas Boulevard in front of the US Embassy. The food was great and I could tell that Mom had a great time with all the speeches of close friends during lunch.

Today, she’s the Prayer Intercessor Head and Senior Citizens Cell Leader at Christ Enthroned Church in Meycauayan, Bulacan. She is also working part-time for a firm that sells and develops properties, condos and apartments.

I recently donated to her my USB MP3 player so that she could listen to her favorite Don Moen, Jimmy Swaggart and Hillsong music. It’s an old music player but it still works after you give it several tugs at the power cord.

So, when Mom’s working part-time, my Dad does most of the household chores. It’s a really different scenario when they retired but we see nothing wrong with adjusting our roles from time to time.

To describe my family, I’d have to quote this anonymous observation: “Families are like fudge. Mostly sweet with a few nuts.”

Maybe not so few, though.
